Murray State’s first-ever TEDx event will be held in the Freed Curd Auditorium on Nov. 13 at 1:30 p.m.
In the spirit of “Ideas Worth Spreading,” TED has created TEDx. TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Our event is called TEDxMurrayStateU, where x = independently organized TED event. At TEDxMurrayStateU, TED Talks video and live speakers will combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events, including ours, are self-organized.
The theme of TEDxMurrayStateU will be social science, discussing various topics ranging from leadership and management to branding and communication. The presentation will feature two TED Talks videos as well as three live speakers, including Phillip Van Hooser, Kayla Barrett and Dr. Dave Gesler.
Patty Parish, one of the Tedx organizers, shared some of her thoughts on what she hopes the University will gain from this event. “I think it’s important to bring this awareness to the area because the Ted Talks are such a unique concept. They cover science, technology, engineering and just about every topic that’s out there. So there’s something for everybody, but it brings ideas into the area that are global.” She said. “This is a unique opportunity for Murray State, and it’s something that we can see grow in the future. We hope to see a large turnout from all across the campus.”
TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to “Ideas Worth Spreading.” Starting as a four-day conference in California almost 30 years ago, TED has grown to support those world-changing ideas with multiple initiatives. The two annual TED Conferences invite the world’s leading thinkers and doers to speak for 18 minutes on a diverse mix of topics. Many of these talks are then made available, free, at TED.com. TED speakers have included Bill Gates, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard Branson, Nandan Nilekani, Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Isabel Allende and former UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown. The TED2014 Conference will take place in Vancouver, British Columbia, along with the TEDActive simulcast in neighboring Whistler. TEDGlobal 2014 will be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
TEDxMurrayStateU will be open to the public with free admission. Space will be limited.
